Abstract:
When two black holes merge, they 'ringdown' as they settle into a final
Kerr state. The ringdown part of the gravitational wave signal probes the
strong field gravity, enabling us to test the general theory of relativity
(GR) in this regime. However, many of these tests are based on calculations
done using black hole perturbation theory. Therefore, it becomes crucial to
understand, at what stage a perturbative description is a 'good'
approximation in a binary black hole merger. In this talk, I will highlight
this particular issue. I will then switch gears and briefly talk about the
ringdown from a data analysis point of view, summarizing the current state
of analysis framework.
