AMALDI RESEARCH CENTER SEMINAR
Title: Gravitational waves from the black hole binaries of the Universe
Speaker: Prof.ssa Monica Colpi
Institution: Universita' di Milano Bicocca
Date: Thursday, 17 January 2019
Time: 4:00pm
Location: Aula Conversi, Marconi Building, Dept. of Physics, Sapienza
University
Abstract:
The detection of a gravitational wave from GW150914 forever changed the
role of gravity in our exploration of the Universe. In the future,
ground and space based interferometers will immensely improve our
knowledge of the Universe and in particular of black holes as
astrophysical objects at the extremes. I will discuss the potential
link existing between stellar and massive black holes that multi-band
gravitational wave observations will unveil. With LISA, the first
interferometer in space and with third generation of ground experiments
we will be able to pierce deep into the distant Universe to discover
the first black hole binaries forming during cosmic dawn, and to learn
on how massive black holes evolve via accretion and mergers across all
cosmic epochs.
