Dear Colleagues,
the gravity theory group is organizing a series of online seminars via Zoom:
https://uniroma1.zoom.us/j/81283707469?pwd=SzkyMk5jRm0xcEN3WE5MYVh1RVFtQT09
ID meeting: 812 8370 7469

*19/10/2020 h11.00: "Bayesian Metric Reconstruction with Gravitational Wave
Observations", by Sebastian Volkel, SISSA (IT)*
*Abstract:*
Theories of gravity extending or modifying general relativity typically
allow for black hole solutions different from the Schwarzschild/Kerr
geometries. Electromagnetic observations have been used to place
constraints on parametrized deviations from the Schwarzschild/Kerr metrics,
in an effort to gain insight on the underlying gravitational theory. In
this work, we show that observations of the gravitational quasi-normal
modes by existing and future interferometers can be used to bound the same
parametrized black hole metrics that are constrained by electromagnetic
observations (e.g. by the Event Horizon Telescope). We argue that our
technique is most sensitive to changes in the background black hole metric
near the circular photon orbit, and that it is robust against the changes
that a gravitational theory differing from general relativity necessarily
introduces in the equations for the gravitational perturbations. We
demonstrate our approach by reconstructing the background metric from a set
of simulated observations using a Bayesian approach.

Some of the seminars will be technical but might be of interest also for
other people. Here is the calendar of next seminars
04/11/2020 h16:00: "The mass gap, the spin gap, and the origin of merging
binary black holes" by Vishal Baibhav, JHU (US)
30/11/2020 h11:00: "Recent results and simulations on boson stars", by Nico
Sanchis-Gual, IST (PT)
16/12/2020 h16.00 "Waveform systematics in the gravitational-wave inference
of tidal parameters and equation of state from binary neutron star
signals", by Rossella Gamba, Jena (DE)
The list will be constantly updated on https://web.uniroma1.it/gmunu/events
Cheers,
Paolo
